Norton is probably the best overall package, now that they've got over the resource hogging issues of the past, and they acquired some serious technology when they acquired PC Tools. (Interestingly, that was the second time they bought a company called PC Tools.)

If you're pretty careful online, then the free products should be fine - remember to run a full MBAM scan every week or so, just in case you picked up a nasty.

Kaspersky is particularly good though, as with AVG, there's an irritating delay while it scans emails before you see them - even with small ones. Avira is also good, and it doesn't have that delay.
