Default HP laserjet suddenly offline

All of a sudden my Color Laserjet 2605 fails to print.

It looks ready — even says so in the small window — but nothing happens. If I look at the print status window I see an unfamiliar circular yellow icon over the printer icon and two text messages that say “Printer offline.”

It is certainly not literally offline — it just went through one of its regular cleaning cycles.

I shut it down and then restarted it. Everything looks normal, but the thing won’t print.

I went to the HP support site thinking I would replace the driver, and spent 20 minutes in circular-logic hell without being able to download it. (They said it is usually updated automatically by Apple, but I was thinking that might be the problem, not the solution.)

Any suggestions?

There's a red ! on the Hold icon in that image ...

That usually means a problem -- what happens if you click on the Hold button? Does it UnHold it ....

I guess you are using MAC OS since you mention Apple so have you checked the support pages, not just drivers, like:

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport...rtTaskId=42095

How are you connecte4d from printer to computer? USB ethernet .... try na different one?

Shut down printer and PC for a couple of minutes and restart ?

Kathleen--

Something similar used to happen to me all the time when I used an ethernet bridge to run my old LaserWriter Select.

Try this: Turn off the printer. Go to System Preferences/Print & Fax. In the list of printers on the left, select the balky printer, then click the "-" button to delete it. Then turn the printer back on, make sure it's connected, and click the "+" button to add a printer. In the "Add Printer" window that appears, select your printer from the list (you may have to wait a few seconds for it to appear in the list), and click the Add button.

Good luck!

Thank you — worked like a charm.

It changes the setting but doesn’t print.

However, Howard’s suggestion worked.

Thank you, gentlemen.

Glad I could help!

BTW: how are you liking the new 27" iMac? I'm about this close to buying one myself.

That isn’t what I got. I ordered a week before the new ones were introduced so I have an older model. And, now I blush, I haven’t started using it yet. My old machine hasn’t quite died, and my life has been so zany that I haven’t set the new one up.

Tsk. You provoked me to unpack it, and now it is (in its white box) sitting on the living room floor. Progress!

I think I would have liked some of the new features that you will get. You can tell me all about them.

Well, I'm glad I'm so provocative—must be nice to have all these expensive toys just lying around unopened!

The main "new feature" I'm interested in is the 27" screen.

Hang tight, and I'll know soon. I ordered one last week, and am waiting to hear when it will ship to me (Friday or Monday, I think). I also bought a secondary monitor for it at an auction sale ($350 for a $999 unit). They had iMacs as well, but they sold for around $1200 each. A deal, but not low enough for me to buy something without a warranty or dealer backup.

They also had G5 and G4 machines, and some of those went as low as $100, but I was warned here to stay away from the boat anchor models.
