Default The New Yorker: free amusements

Looking around for a new source of online jigsaws I discovered an old bookmark for New Yorker magazine cover jigsaws. They are not large (the proportion of a cover and about 25% the size) and not super demanding, but the reward is that you get to see one of the covers when you finish. And there is the nice typographic treat of using the title type, in the iconic Irvin typeface, to start the puzzle. (BTW: Wikipedia has a nice write-up on Rea Irvin, whose design this is.)

There isn’t much room to play in, so it is slow going in the beginning when you cannot separate all the pieces to view them clearly. You don’t get to choose the cover — the only option is three levels of difficulty.

When you finish, you are invited to read the issue online.

I am a subscriber, but this site doesn’t seem to recognize that, so I believe it is free for all. (Please let me know if not.)

If this bit of pleasurable time-wasting leaves you wanting more, check out KT Meaney’s point-by-point critique of the magazine’s design on the AIGA web site. She makes good sense to me, and when she doesn’t, I enjoyed making arguments for some other notion. (Someone should look up Part 1, as this is a continuation.)

I have these bookmarked too ... they are addictive! If I don't have much time I just do a couple of quickies at Level 1, but Levels 2 and 3 are more challenging and fun. Regardless, I love seeing the finished cover.
