Default Interface Icons

Not sure I understand what it is you are wanting here (I might just be barking up a tree that could the wrong one).

Here is a free set on icons that might be of use?

This is what I think of when I read "web icons" anyway.

Here are some of the others linked to at your link: 40 Beautiful Free Icon Sets. I point to them especially because of their variety. The article does remind us that some of these sets, while free, may have some restrictions on them (no commercial use; requirement to credit the creator; etc.).

Still — amazing riches in the icon department.

Thanks, Bo. Those are some nice icons. I had started out trying an icon font. My idea was I could use the font to lay an icon on top of a square version of the forum buttons. But it didn't look as good as I hoped it would. Then I got tired of searching and I'm going to use the icons that came with the forum. So it looks like I'm done tweaking it. I've made all the template changes and CSS changes I wanted to.

Now, onto the next part of the project. I don't think it will take as long as the forum.

Amazing. Some people must love making icons.

I'm glad somebody does. I have a natural lack of talent in this area.

The trick seems to be searching for "interface icons." Before I was searching for "forum icons" and not finding ones suitable for forums.

I find most of them boring and often — much too often — not good at communicating anything. I would be sunk on most sites without the little notes that describe what the thing means.

Most of the buttons and icons I see look as if the creator made images that were easy to make on the equipment/software available — rather than trying to create the most communicative little doodad possible for a particular task.

Or maybe it is just that the simple old-fashioned line-art icons from years ago did the best job of communicating, and now everyone just tries to stylize those.

True. There are few conventions with icons. I can't even remember what icons mean on boards I've been using for years. I usually mouse-over to figure them out. OTOH, I usually just hit "new posts" and start looking at thread titles. So the icons are rarely needed.

Might as well add one more: http://www.softicons.com/free-icons?start=0. Lots of free icons there.

FWIW, Woo Function icon set proved to be very useful. From it I derived most of my icon elements.
