Default Mobile versions of sites ... when are they appropriate?

I've really come to appreciate the companies whose web sites detect that I'm on a mobile phone browser. In fact sometimes I'll use the mobile version of the site on the desktop, simply because as a rule it's blazing fast and pared down to just the stuff I need to accomplish the task at hand. Lots to be said for that.

I've toyed with the idea of a mobile version of one or more of my own sites (if only via a mobile version of the css). I wonder if there's any reasonable case to be made for the effort though. One site is a huge FAQ about PowerPoint.

If you've run into a PPT question, it's almost a sure thing that you're using PowerPoint. That means you're at a computer, not a mobile phone. Granted, you may not have internet access on the PC, but for the most part, I'd expect most of our visitors to be on a PC, so they'd have no real need of a mobile version of the site.

[Reminds self to have a look at the logs to see if we're getting traffic from a substantial number of mobile browsers. If so, there's the answer. Cater to 'em.]
