In my Luddite view, if you just want a cell phone, find out who has the best coverage in your area and look for the least expensive phone whose style does not make you ill. The iPhone and its kind are a real time (and money) sink if you have no need of their features.

We have Verizon because their coverage in LA is first rate. I need one because I am on the road a lot and my clients (and my wife) need to reach me. But I have no interest in surfing the web or dealing with email on a device that fits in my pocket. I don't even like to send text messages from the phone.

All that being true, I think the real full keyboards allow for quicker text entry than do the touch-screen keyboards. Tactile feedback is important.

The newest iPhone certainly looks good and has a great display. 320 pixel/in is a new record.
