I have never (and would never) give them access to that! But I gather that quite a few people do.
Accessing Facebook with Firefox on my Macs - that is my experience also. I would have to tell/allow Facebook to send out such emails (which I have never done). i.e. It would take an action on the users part to generate the emails. Facebook won't do it without being told to go ahead.
