You could certainly get a prepaid phone today or tomorrow.

I know when I got my first cell phone, it didn't take long -- maybe 20 minutes? -- to pick it out, sign the contract, and have the phone set up.

If you have a Costco or Sam's Club membership, you might want to call them and see if they sell prepaid phones. I know they do sell regular cell phone service -- our Costco has (or at least had) a Verizon kiosk, but they had limited options. Sam's also had a kiosk, but I don't remember which provider.

As you said, the investment in a prepaid phone would be small, so it could be a good bet for you. That way you won't be signing a contract for a year (probably the minimum you can get for a regular cell phone) that'll probably cost at least $500.

Personally, I'd go for a prepaid phone plan that lets the minutes roll over. I think the expiring minutes thing is a racket.

P.S. Just checked online and Sam's Club does have several prepaid phone options -- you'd need to check and see what's available in your area (f you have a Sam's membership). I also checked Walmart's site -- I didn't realize how cheap the prepaid phones could be! They had phones for under $10, some with "double minutes" promotions.
