There used to be scads of books that attempted to be just what you are looking for. Just as there used to be scads of monthly magazines that covered the "dtp" scene in its early years. I truly don't know if there are any more.

I suspect that you might find something if you were to sniff around in a Community College bookstore or a local art school's.

I have a copy of The Elements of Typographic Style that I would be happy to pass on to you (if you promise to read it<G>). It would cost $3 to mail it to you. You can PM me ore respond here, as you wish. Too bad that I no longer have any others.
