Adversely. ;-)

But if the carrier's plain includes voice mail, callers are usually put through to it directly when the phone isn't on.

On the plus side, somebody at the telco told me to turn the phone off then on periodically; apparently it calibrates itself in some way as part of power up. Or something like that. In any case, it seems to improve the signal (more bars, just works better) after a power cycle.
