Default True small caps in Word 2010 beta

Does Word 2010 beta support true small caps? Various news reports claim that it does, but I cannot get the function to work.

I am using an OpenType font (Adobe Garamond Pro) that contains true small caps, and I have the OpenType option enabled. I have verified that ligatures work. But small caps are the annoying "synthetically reduced" caps that Word has offered from the beginning. I cannot get it to use the true small caps in the font itself.

Is this capability available?

My observation is the same as yours. Publisher 2010 doesn't either - the contrast is particularly marked in Caslon Pro.

There's a support forum for the 2010 beta here:
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/...ory/office2010

Might be worth asking in the Word section.

I actually have posted the question there, but have received no response thus far.

Well that's the thing about Microsoft's public betas. They just sort of cast their bread on the water and go away. It's more about marketing than finding bugs.

As far as I know, this is the first time they've had any sort of support forum for an Office public beta, so it's an improvement of sorts.

By the way, in that same forum but in the PowerPoint section, someone posted a question about ligatures. It seems they're not supported in PPT, but I suggested a more efficient workaround than using Insert Symbol (basically using AutoCorrect to do the job).

You could probably apply the same logic to inserting true small caps if the font supports it.

There is a difference between ligatures and small capitals: the former are in Unicode, the latter are not, except as alternative glyphs.

What is odd is that numerous press reviews have claimed that the true small caps feature is supported natively. Anyhow, it seems pretty clear that it is not.

I am not sure about that. I have only tested Word 14 Technical Review, and then only Context 1.

Well: I downloaded the Publisher beta, and true small caps do work in that program, though not in Word. I can only hope that they wouldn't ship with the function implemented in one program, but not another.
