I must have an old version or something, because every so often something prompts it to open and it tells me I need to install that thing. Maybe I haven’t checked it out lately.

The essential difference is that NeoOffice is more Mac-ified, with support for OS dictionaries, Services, Data Detectors, and all things Mac. It tends to be a bit behind OpenOffice's version, because of the time to implement all the Mac bells and whistles.
Hasn’t been a problem so far — my favorite Word was probably 4, the version 5 that I skipped, and (grudgingly) 6; none of the newer ones. And I love good old basic Excel. So I am content.
