Default Recover corrupt PM file?

Hello, I'm a newbie.

I'm trying to open a few PageMaker 6.x or 7 files from an old Mac in Windows InDesign CS3 ... and I'm having problems. The error is "The PageMaker document is damaged and cannot be recovered".

Googling it tells me that its SP3 and that CS3 fixed the problem. I have installed a PC with XP without SP3 and tried reading it ... still without success. I've used Cross Platform converter ... also without success. I have come to accept that the file is probably corrupt.

I have many similar files from the same source and most of them are OK. There is this batch that dates back a while and I can't read that.

In fact, I'll tell you all a funny thing. In some cases, if I can't open a file, I drag and before I drop, I hold it suspended over ID and ... after about 10secs I drop it... and presto. Or, if it fails the first time, I try again ... drag ... hold ... drop ... and usually it succeeds. That has been my experience for these 40+ files. But there are these 10 files.

My question is ...

Is there a way to open it "best effort"... and strip the formatting if necessary. -- this of course is the worst case scenario.

Thanks in advance
Regards
Ian
