From what you say, I'm not sure whether you have checked that the printer has a valid IP address on your network, and that the Mac print queue is setup with the correct address.
If the Mac has a wrong IP address for the printer, then that would also fit your symptoms.

Many HP printers have a web control panel, which you can access by typing their IP address into your web browser. However, it halts and flags an error if you are on a Mac, so you have to:
1. Enable the Developer menu in Safari (in preferences > Advanced)
2. Change the User Agent to Internet Explorer.

Then you can change lots of settings on the printer. Of course, you need a valid IP address first.

You may also want to use the Network Utility to "ping" your printer. That will check whether the printer is receiving data from your computer.
Click on the Ping tab.
Type the IP address of the printer.
Select 10 pings.
Click "Ping" !
The results will tell you that 10 pings have been sent, and how many have been received.

You can also use the NetStat tab to have a look at what devices are on your network.
Click the "Display routing table information" button.
Click "NetStat"

The output will show you all the devices on your network.
