As I found out yesterday, if you're going to install the desktop version (as opposed to the portable), you should install the latest Java JRE first: OO.o comes with a JRE bundled (the minimum it needs, 6 update 7), but ignores your installation directory for JRE if you already have one. So the trick is to first get & install the latest JRE (6_13 now), then do a custom (not "Complete") install of OO.o and tell it to not install JRE. (It still places a JRE installer file, but doesn't execute it then - you can safely remove it after the OO.o installation is complete: it will find your previously-installed JRE just fine.)
