Default Amazon Kindle 2?

I ran across this discussion (with links to photos) of a revamped Kindle. Amazon appears to have solved some of the problems with version one, especially the likelihood of accidentally turning a page.

The scroll wheel has been replaced with a joystick. Buttons are smaller, and harder to read.

No more SD card slot; battery not user-accessible; instead of a proprietary recharger new model works with a miniUSB cable.

I hope Steve or others who have the first model will look this over and comment on the changes.

I'm hoping they're wrong about the SD card. Not that I've filled the built-in memory up or even USED an SD card with mine, but I like the idea of having it available.

Losing the user-accessible battery is, IMO, a very bad idea. The batteries for the thing aren't all that expensive and being able to keep a spare charged up and ready to slip in as needed on a long trip? Useful, I'd think. Err. Not that I have one of those either.

I wonder how the usb charger works. Do you need to plug it into a PC? That too would be lunatic. If you can still charge it from a PC or a wall-wart *via* the USB cable, a la iPod, I'd like that.

The whole "it's ugly" brouhaha? Yawwwwnnnnn. If it's that important to you, people, buy the Sony. Pay extra for much more limited choice of books. Whatever makes you happy. Just be QUIET. ;-)

It's hard to say whether the joystick would be an improvement or not. I don't find myself using the scroll wheel all that much, so I doubt the change would be a deal maker or breaker.

There's certainly room for improvement in the button positioning (Next/Previous page ones, at least), and the Back button should be positioned a lot further out of harm's way than it is in version 1, but you make a few mistakes, you get used to it, you don't make any more mistakes. I suspect the people who make the most noise about this are the ones who've used it the least.

Finally, from the photos, it looks like the new unit is a good bit longer than the current one. Since the extra length, or what looks like it, buys no more screen real estate, I don't think I'd care for it.

Then again, it could all change between now (or a couple months ago when this page was published, I'm fairly sure) and then. Whenever then might be.

You make sensible points.

And I wonder what will emerge, and when. Amazon invites us to pre-order, with a three to five week delivery promise.

Yep. From large to super-large, as I understand it.

On the original, yes. I can't imagine they'd remove that feature from the new version.

That'd depend on whatcha mean by large, wouldn't it? ;-)

I haven't compared mine against printed type of known size (I really should ... tuits, send tuits) but I've got mine set around the middle of the range which gives me text that's a bit bigger than the average paperback.
