You probably know that "lorem ipsum" comes from a passage in Cicero. The person interviewed in the feature has an explanation for why the familiar placeholder begins in the middle of a word ("dolorem") in the original text. He found that the 1914 Loeb edition of the Cicero has a page break after the first syllable of "dolorem," putting "lorem ipsum" at the top of a page. He proposes that someone started with the galley for that page and altered the type a bit to create dummy text for the publisher's designers.
