Default Happy 2009 to everyone!

For all those I cannot send a physical card (that is most of you), here is my "happy new year card" in electronic form (thumbnail links to full size):

(for those of you on my list: the "real" card will follow...)

And happy new year to you.

Lovely photo. Yemen? Such a serious young face.

Yes, Yemen. I didn't travel at all this year, so I couldn't do my "traditional" photo from my last trip - last year's had to do. Going through my photos, I picked this child because of the expectant look in her eyes: she's not posing, but observing approaching tourists - will they bring some business? Buy handicrafts, be guided around the village? That's serious business (Yemen is poor, so earning a little cash is more than welcome), so that expectant look has a lot more behind it.

But her face is still that of a child - I also have pictures of young children in Yemen where you wonder if there's still a child in there, or an old woman... and young girls tending small children where you wonder if it's a little brother or sister, or her own child. Most women have a hard life in Yemen, child marriages, although forbidden, do still happen. Knowing that, you never quite know what you're seeing... but I've met fun, cheerful children, too!

By the time they're 12, 13, most girls (and most women) don't want to be photographed any more, so pictures of older girls and grown women are scarce while men and boys are often quite eager to be photographed. Still, I have enough variety - I'm thinking of doing a series of "Faces of Yemen" as greeting cards...

That's a lovely card, Marjolein. Very expressive face, beautifully captured! Happy 2009 to you, also!

We have had snow all day, to wrap up 2008. Now it is getting seriously cold (they are issuing clothing warnings to all the people who go to watch the stupid ball come down at Times Square).

Then it will be up the 30s and even close to the 40s again by Saturday. (That is Fahrenheit.)

We've had frost for a few days now, and last night and all day today it's been foggy - everything now has a layer of white frost - uncomfortable outside, but it's beautiful! But the fog isn't nice for the fireworks...
