I'm reluctant to jump into a thread that has run its course, but I was left with the impression that people might think IBM's Lotus Symphony is some sort of updating of Word Pro and 123. Sorry!

Lotus Symphony is based on OpenOffice, not Word Pro. It is cross platform and uses Open Document Format.

Why not just go with "the original," OpenOffice? It gives pretty good control over text, handles graphics decently, and saves to PDF. It imports DOC files and can save to DOC format, if you must. Plus it's free to download and use.
