Default How does Facebook work?

An old friend looked me up and gave me a link to Facebook to catch up with him.

What a PITA! Had to register (otherwise couldn’t do anything there). Strike one.

Then I found my friend’s profile and tried to view more, but then (only then) got a note that I needed to wait for him to accept me as a friend, then click through. Okay, normal enough, but why so vague (and late)? Anyway, strike two.

Got the e-mail, clicked, was able to log and be accepted as a friend. But then what? I saw his name next to a sort of avatar; clicking on either of those did exactly nothing. Wrote to my friend; he said I should be able to click on either his name or image and get to his wall (FB-speak for page). No dice. Strike three. But I’m a good sport.

Decided maybe it was the old Safari/Mac problem. So I used his e-mail link with Firefox. This time I actually got to his wall. I saw a link to 39 photos, so I clicked on that. Nada. Back to avatar plus name, with a warning that I had to be his friend to view his pictures. But I was his friend! That’s how I got there! What is the matter with that thing?

So I clicked on the back button, and got back to Square One, unknown, friendless, lost in the wilderness. Saw a Log Out link, clicked on it, deleted the tab, and gave up.

Is it just me? Am I too old or too stupid to use Facebook?

Any of you on that thing?

Yep, I'm on Facebook and use it all the time. Play a great game called PackRat...

Social networking sites like Facebook have had to force people to jump through hoops to connect with friends because of stalking and all sorts of other nasties.

I find that I can see the profiles of friends of friends as long as they're in the Australian group. Adding friends is usually pretty easy, as long as the friend request is responded to fairly quickly.

The menus are a bit interesting and the jury is still out as to whether the new Facebook is better or worse than the old one. A few of us here are on there.

So. I need to belong to a group in order to see my friend’s page?

Yikes. Well, maybe after dinner I will try again. The only way I have had any semblance of luck is by going back to the friend-confirming e-mail, clicking the link again, and going from there. Not exactly intuitive, that.

Thanks.

You shouldn't have to belong to any group. As long as you are logged in and your friend has accepted you as a friend you should be able to see all of his/her stuff. I use Facebook daily on a Mac/Firefox without problems. Facebook does seem to take its own sweet time responding to clicks at times. Capacity problems maybe?

I definitely liked the old interface over the new one but do not see them going back.

Thanks. I guess I will figure it out.

I'm on FB, too, as of fairly recently, and am still figuring it out. I was talked into signing up by an old college friend. Once on there I discovered I knew a few other people on it ... and have now collected a whopping 33 friends. (Quite a few of whom happen to be Australian, LOL!)

You should have received a friend request from me by now. (Prompted by a friend suggestion from Ann.) I don't spend a lot of time on FB but have had some enjoyable exchanges. I find that navigating FB is not particularly intuitive so I tend not to visit unless notified by email of some sort of activity on my page. But when that happens I go poke around for awhile, so I assume that I will gradually become more familiar with its features and quirks as time goes on.

I have to say that so far I've had more fun with the pair of turtles I've placed on my iGoogle home page than with FB. What a hoot!

To see information before the friend request is confirmed, you need to be part of the same group as the friend.

To get into Facebook, just type 'facebook' into the address field in any browser. Once there, you can go to your own page by clicking on your name in the top menu bar. Once you are on your own page, you can see all your friends and click on their avatars to go to their pages. It's quite intuitive...

Not sure about that, but I did join a group, unwittingly (by providing my home town!), and after that everything worked.

So now I am on Facebook. Gee.

Thank you — I made a page, and then everything worked. I think I replied to your friend request, and Robin’s, and Mike’s. Whew. Whole world of people.

I was prompted to go there by an old college friend I hadn’t seen in 45 years!

Doesn’t seem intuitive to me, but Ann assures me it is. She is usually right, so guess I will wait and see.

Turtles?

Thanks. Whether I needed to I am not sure, but now have a group (by accident, sort of). Once that happened, all sorts of people popped up.

I am too used to forums, I guess. Everything else seems odd.
