Aside from anything else, you probably will not want to pay for high-quality digital printing equipment (it would probably wreck your equation). It is more likely to be profitable to farm out the actual printing — let someone else eat the costs of the equipment.
Ktinkel\Katherine, you're right, I've had a few quotations from a local printer and his prices are pretty reasonable. In any case with regard to high-quality digital printing equipment I wouldn't know what to look for.
Actually this particular printer does deals, he'll publish `for free' in return for a stake in a new publication.
To be truthful, I like the adventure of desktop publishing, the adventure of buying DTP equipment for the first time, the adventure of learning DTP, of actually publishing something, and even the adventure of trying to sell the publication.

The difference in quality between, say, a 1200 dpi 11X17-inch laser printer and what a POD (print-on-demand) pro offers is fairly great.
Sorry, don't understand this.

Another thought: If your expertise lies in the concept, copy, content — why would you want to also become a techie print manager. (Even in Gutenberg’s day, the printing specialties diversified rapidly!
True. It's too easy to become distracted. This actually happened to me with my web sites, I became too interested in the mechanics of building web sites, should have spent more time writing. The techie side is pretty alluring though. Maybe it's a good idea to learn just enough technical stuff.

Annc\Ann, this 4200 just has to be good enough to print A5 booklets, that's all I ask of it.
