Default Photojournalist expanding into desktop publishing

Hi everyone, I'm a photojournalist and am just getting into desktop publishing.
My first project is to be a booklet with the theme of local history, which I've discovered from my research is a very popular theme.
My main problem has been deciding which equipment to buy.
My first mistake was to type a search term which was too vague in the search box, because I was greeted with a vintage `Adana' hand operated printing press which was for sale.
Mmm. I was really thinking of something more high tech.
This info might be useful for someone: when I was researching which laser printer to buy I more-or-less decided on a HP, and when I asked a dealer which model he recommended he recommended the 4200 DTN, saying that it was very reliable.
He had no reason to mislead me as it wasn't the most expensive printer that he was selling.
However, since then I've been looking at the idea of using a good quality photocopier to print my pages.
It might not be important if the quality of the photographs that it produces isn't very good, as the quality of the original photographs that I'll be reproducing isn't too good either.
It might, just might, be more economical than a laser printer, too.
