Nice to haves are:
  • Duplexing
  • Colour (doesn't have to be brilliant, because my cheap Epson inkjet does really good colour)
I bought a refurbished HP Laserjet4+ from a laserprinter repair shop several years back and it has been happily churning out prints ever since. I got one with a postscript card, a network card, and maxed-out RAM for under $200. There is a duplexing attachment--I've seen it on e-bay for pretty cheap. It doesn't do colour.
