InDesign allows one to apply different leading to different lines in the same paragraph. So, you need to make sure you have the whole paragraph selected, including the paragraph return, and then apply the leading. Alternatively, go to preferences>type and check "apply leading to entire paragraph."

yeah, the whole problem turned out to be a different leading for the return, easily and wonderfully solved... once you know. Thanks for replying.
