I need to know just what I put in the telephone number field, whether, for example, I need country code and even international call prefixes to the number. Also, I need to know just what goes after the @ sign in the email address. I have that for other cell phone providers, but not DIGI.
SMS-over-email is a minefield, first of all because not all carriers support it - that's the first thing you'd need to find out: is it possible at all?

If it is, then every provider has their own "pattern" for how to make up a target email address that will result in an email sent to that address ending up as an SMS message on the recipient's phone, via some provider-specific magic.

So, basically, you'll have to ask someone local (and who uses the same provider):
  1. is it possible at all to send an email that will end up as an SMS message?
  2. if so, what is the (provider-specific) "pattern" to create an email address from a phone number?

I will still be here in Malaysia (going from KL to Ipoh this morning by bus), for over another week, so learning how to do the SMS would still be helpful. I don't have access to a cell phone, but I could send SMS. Email to my niece is not very reliable, because she doesn't check it often enough.
You may be better off just buying a cheap phone and a pre-paid card... (make sure it does allow you to send SMS).
