The disadvantage of that is that they're still local, unless you regularly ship your CD/DVDs to another physical location.

Online backups OTH can be completely encrypted - even before they leave your machine. I think the best strategy is to use both, and especially use remote backup for really vital data. Having your keywords on a USB stick (encrypted, of course) that you carry with you when leaving for, say, more than a few hours, is another part of the puzzle.

I've set up the first and the last but fear my current machine is not up to the extra work that local encryption and uploading data would cause.
