I've been doing experiments with scanning 3d-objects on a flatbed scanner. I was surprised there was quite a range within which an object is still reasonably sharp, and I imagine that range would vary by brand of scanner.

I imagine it's quite possible a distance of 1-2 centimeters off the surface of the glass plate could cause the kind of distortion here and still not be totally out of focus.
