Default Forum Maintenance Today

We will be closing the forum today to update the vBulletin software. It shouldn’t take long, so please check back shortly if you find the forum unavailable.

We will close around 5:45 p.m. EDT (10:45 p.m. GMT, right?), and the task should take no more than one hour if all goes well.

Sorry for any inconvenience.

Well, that seemed to go smoothly - at least, everything seems fine this morning.

It did indeed. Thanks to Kathleen's preparation and thoroughness.

This time I was prepared for all the snags that occurred last time (end of January), and then we lucked out — there were no new snags!

And the new upgrade script actually retained our Get Posts dropdown, which is otherwise a fussy bit of template modification. It was a breeze, actually.

I do see one or two things that seem different; but they are not showstoppers.

I've not spotted anything myself.

Mind you, as I get older, I have an increasing affinity with chickens. They say that if you introduce a new hen into a coup at night then, when the others wake up in the morning, they won't remember that the new one wasn't there the previous day.

One thing you might like to consider - there are too many menu items on the General Discussions page. I have to scroll down and this is a small hassle. They always told me that people switch off if there are more thgan seven items in a menu. Three is the minimum, five is the best, seven is the top limit.

Seven is a "top limit" only for items you have to keep in your head. For items you can always see and only need to recognize the limit is much higher.

The "no more than seven items" must be one of the most misudnerstood and misquoted pieces of research around.

Actually, categories help by making wide-ranging information accessible. True, there can be too many; but I don’t think our list is too long, considering the subjects we try to cover.

Ah. I agree a rich menu of dishes is impressive, but I find I only check out five of the items on the DPF forum list. I wonder if other people have similarly reduced their data input. Ought we to have about three separate forae?
