You can invite as many Google account holders as you like to edit/contribute to a file. The advantage is that unless you download the files you are always using Google's bandwidth.

One of my daughters used to use GDocs for schoolwork because she could access the essays from wherever she had access to a web browser. Now she carries it all with her on a laptop which is more risky as there is usually no recent backup...

Even if you don't use GDocs, a Google account gives you access to Webmaster Tools, Analytics etc.
My wife has a Yahoo! account. She seems to get a great deal more SPAM and see a great deal more in ads than I ever do, but I will take your word and that of other forum members and go ahead with a Gmail account.

It is easy to be signed up for far too many kinds of accounts these days, so I have become cautious about adding more. I do have two email accounts on Comcast.net to provide as email addresses on new accounts, so I can avoid SPAM on my main account and also more easily see responses on the extra accounts.
