There are several digital vanity publishers, but I thought she wanted to be published the old-fashioned way, by being accepted by a publishing house, get an advance and royalty, and have them do all the work.

She could probably self-publish excerpts on the web and still submit her manuscript somewhere. But using a vanity publisher would almost certainly turn off any of the traditional houses.

That was certainly true a few years ago; perhaps things have changed enough so it is not longer so, but I would advise caution.
