I use an external HD dedicated to all my downloads, including paid-for, trial, and to-be-considered software (with various fall-backs). For each application/plugin/whatnot I have a directory in a category directory tree, with relevant bookmarks (home page, FAQ, support, downloads...), the actual download (usually with version number added to the file name so I can keep a history), evaluation notes, copies of emails with registration numbers, etc. I have downloads and registration keys from years and years back.

(Still some older stuff on CDs and ZIP disks but all that will go on my "Downloads" drive, too. I need to do some cleaning up, then I can use an identical drive as a mirror of my download drive.)
