Default ? from a Newby. No. Really.

Hi!
I'm starting here because it seems like a very good place to start! I live in a small, somewhat remote town in Northwestern Ontario, Canada. I am travelling the path of midlife and am trying to zero in on "what I want to do when I grow up". I am getting ever closer ...
I am interested in finding out more about desk top publishing. Although I maintain a few blogs, I am not really computer-savvy and am looking at the print form.
I would like to start a small at-home business to serve my community and eventually branch out to other communities in the region and, possibly even end up doing freelance work through the internet. To be quite honest, I'm not really exactly sure what it is all about. I am thinking of brochures, pamphlets, information sheets, flyers, etc. I am also interested in offering writing services (content? proofreading? copywriting? editing?), design (logo, etc.) and eventually photography.
My husband and I own two retail businesses and I have enjoyed doing a lot of design work for them - coupons, gift certificates, flyers, ads, posters and other promotional material. The software I use currently is Printshop (12 I believe).
I would like to invest in a new program that would meet my needs personally and for my business idea. It doesn't have to be "the best" by any means! I also want to invest in a good photo software program as well.
I have probably gone on too long already but to summarize, I would love answers, guidance or direction regarding the following information:
1) What exactly is desktop publishing?
2) What range of services is generally offered?
3) What is a good (maybe for a starter) software program?
4) Photography program?
5) Any recommendations as to reading material?
6) Any recommendations as to websites to peruse>
Thanks for sticking with me this far! Can't wait to get going ...
