Have you tried opening their files in some recent version of Word to see if they are valid to begin with? I would have to wonder if the Chinese partner is using OpenOffice or a similar "compatible" program, which isn't alwys compatible when heavy formatting is involved. Or simply a different version of Word, or some creative manual formatting. There are many ways that a "simple" word processing program can have "wrong" formatting in it, making conversions into a very individual business.

The less formatting they do over there--the easier your job will be over here.

Yes, I've learnt quickly how to do all of this. Most often when I open a figure or table in word I end up having to take out the text and reapply it in pagemaker.
Now my problem is trying to make an imported graphic containing text look high resolution enough for print - I'm sure its been copied from a pdf and inserted, and there's no way to get it separately as an image.
Oh the joys...! But I love this job, so I shouldn't complain too much.

If Pagemaker (which I've never used) is anything like InDesign, graphics are displayed onscreen as a 72 ppi "placeholder" to improve perfomance and keep file size down. The placeholder links to the original, high-resolution graphic, which will be used when you go to print; so it's OK if the images (including the image-based text) look crummy and pixellated onscreen.

Problem is, they look crummy when printed as well. Goes to show that writers should send images with their papers!

Pagemaker has an option to let you show the graphics in low rez mode (fast) or full rez (slow). But that doesn't appear to be the problem, alas.

Can you request the original images? I used to have to do that with clients, for most of whom the whole notion of resolution is a black hole.

Default Cpoying Tables from Word

Make sure the file's saved

If you want to create a link to the file, click Link
Otherwise, choose Enhanced Metafile as the paste type
I am using Serif PagePlusX3.
I have tried this Steve and it works well except on the one I am trying at present the table borders disappear and some of the text changes to italics. The link option doesn't show as available. Any suggestions?

John,

Normally, I think, importing works better than pasting in Serif. However, you will note from the manual that importing tables works differently than text. Instead of going to the Insert menu, go to the Table menu and look for an Insert sub-menu.

If you are going to paste, the procedure works better in the WritePlus (edit story) than the actual frame.

I don't like using tables in general, and I have a situation now where I probably should be using one, but I'll try to think of another way of doing the info first.

I doubt Serif has a file link for updating (which I read can actually be a disadvantage), and probably that would have to be done manually. But I'm just guessing, as the feature does not interest me.

Since George is familiar with PagePlus and I'm not, I'd go with his advice.
