It's a slightly worrying trend the way hardware manufacturers are tying products in with limited technologies. In the UK the iPhone is only available with an O2 contract. Since the O2 network isn't available anywhere near here there's little value in an iPhone.

If the Kindle could be loaded with pdfs then I could put all those computer manuaals on one -- now that would be a benefit.
It does seem to be a US-onlian sort of thing, at least for now.

As to limited range, that already appears to be an issue for the Kindle even in the US and I gather that Alaska isn't even on their map. OTOH, they have to start somewhere.

Apparently, though, there's a way to load up books from a computer via USB (or via USB thumb, I'm not clear on which), when you don't have a good whispernet connection.

And there *is* a way to send PDFs and some other formats to the device; that was a dealmaker/breaker as far as I was concerned, for exactly the reason you describe.

The PDF support is listed as "experimental" and they point out that not all PDFs will work at all (formatting/screen size issues I think). And apparently there are PDF to MOBI converters (MOBI is yet another PDF-type format, optimized for PDAs and the like? Not familiar with it but judging from some forum comments I read, it's not that uncommon).

But they get it, I think. They've got the pieces they need to make it work, at least for geeks of my flavor.
