Default Fontographer : bmp to outline (correct procedure??)

I have scanned some letters and I would like to paste each scanned letter into a font cell in Fontographer.

The scans are stored as bitmap files.

I was wondering what the correct procedure is when you want to:

1) paste each bitmap letter into a font cell in Fontographer
2) convert each bitmap in a font cell to an outline representation

Is there something that needs to be configured prior to pasting the
bitmap-letter into a font cell ?

It would be great, if somebody could give me a step-by-step guide on how it should be done.

Here is what I have done so far:

1) Open the bmp-file in MS Paint
2) Select All
3) Copy
4) Start Fontographer
5) Click File->New Font
6) Double click on a font cell
7) Paste bmp into font cell
8) Click Element->Auto Trace

There's a program called ScanFont that converts scanned images to fonts; it works with several of FontLab's products, and I have seen Fontographer mentioned, but didn't take much notice (I haven't got it).
