For an off line XHTML validator, I went with HTML Kit. As a full feature text editor, this is as good as any program mentioned in this thread. It is free and has 400 free plug-ins.

The validator is a plug-in, and in using it, I have already found errors on pages that got past W3C and FireFox. That was nice.
