Not for each thread! I'd have a "thread" table and a "post" table, with each post having its own id as well as the thread id.

Starting a new thread then creates a record in the thread table as well as in the post table. Deleting a post only deletes a record from the post table, and the system makes sure it doesn't end up with an empty thread as removing threads is an admin/moderator action, not a user action.

That, at least, is what I imagine happening here, and how I'd design it myself.
