Default Transparency Issue: Fade to Back

I have faded an image to the back of the page and put images on top of it and some of these have drop shadows.
When I print, columns of white appear down the page, blocking out the backround transparency image, not what is on "top" of it.
g5 mac 10.4.1, InDesign CS2 (3 is coming!) Canon Color 3220

Can anyone tell me what I am doing incorrectly? Sometimes I feel like a 14 year old driving a Ferrari.
