Won't do it on PC, either. I just tried it, with a font that has only one version, and nothing happens. I also tried it with a nuclear family -- Franklin Gothic -- and it did work.

So apparently it's foolproof in InDesign.

Quark is another matter -- even in version 7, it will fake it. Not an endearing feature.
