Default Domain name extensions

I'm fixin' to register a new domain or two, and am finding that some of the names I was considering are not available with the .com or .net extension.

I'm not clear on the implications of using other extensions, although obviously I don't want to use one that doesn't make sense, like .tv.

Is there any reason why I should avoid using the .us extension?

educational.tv ? I think it may actually be available. public.tv is taken, as is m.tv

laxa.tv ?

outrageou.us

Some UK companies use domain.com whereas others use domain.co.uk. It can be quite confusing when domain.com and domain.co.uk are used by different companies.

Personally I'd always recommend using a unique 'domain' name where possible. So many people just assume domains are always .com.

I would suggest sticking with .com for any business or personal web site, and .org for non-profit organizations. Although .us is cheap, I think it is best to stick with .com and .org, which are the two that most users expect, along with .edu and .gov, which private users cannot use. I have a .biz registration for use when we couldn't get the .com name, but that is a special case.

It's getting tougher to find a .com name that's not already taken.

I already do have one .net domain, though, and people seem to be able to handle that, so maybe I'll go with .net for the new domain(s).

I would prefer to use .com since it's the extension that everyone knows, but the names I want aren't available with that extension.

I'm trying to pick names that I don't have to spell out for people, and that are short, if not sweet.

If you search for available names at GoDaddy, you will get suggestions of alternates that might work. These may include using underscores or hyphens to link words.

The problem with doing that is that people will forget the hyphen (or whatever) and end up at some other site. (Sweet Maria‘s coffee, my green bean supplier, had this problem for a while — there was a porn site called sweetmaria.com; the coffee people had an s in the middle.)

But if you use a different extension, you have the same problem. People will type .com reflexively, and unfortunately end up at another site.

Still, sometimes the suggestions are useful. And GoDaddy’s is as sensible a name-checking place as any of them.

On the other hand, if you, the queen of titling, cannot think of a unique name, I dunno. You may be in trouble here.

Well, it was certainly a source of amusement. Just for fun, I searched for marlene.com, knowing full well it wasn't available, and one of GoDaddy's suggestions was hotmarlene.com.

Who in their right mind would register that?? <LOL>

For that reason, I'm not considering anything with a hyphen or underscore. Underscores can be a problem in particular because of a URL is underlined, the underscore isn't obvious, and some less literate web users might actually think there's a space in the URL.

I don't seem to be able to think of much that hasn't already been thunk of (and snagged).

I've got a list of six that I am considering. Might just get 'em all.

That’s what I keep doing, and then feel guilty for doing it. But hey, you never can tell when having an odd name at hand will be useful, right?
