Default Helvetica movie in NYC

There was a short piece in today’s New York Times announcing that Helvetica, the movie, is opening today at the IFC Center (323 Sixth Avenue & Third Street) in New York’s Greenwich Village. The writer seemed a little puzzled by all the fuss, and declared the film to be “too long but fascinating” at 80 minutes, but he does provide the specifics for anyone in a position to go see it. The length of the run was not stated.

There is also a fairly intelligent review of the movie in the New York Sun today.

The DVD is due out Nov. 6 and can be be pre-ordered here.
There was a special pack there with extra goodies for (iirc) $75, but they've already sold out 1,000 units.
I saw it in Boston in April and highly recommend it. Among other things, it's beautifully photographed and technically stunning.

It is curious that Helvetica has opponents, when online there has been far more opposition to Arial and Comic Sans, or at least it seems that way to me. Perhaps those in this forum are more Internet oriented than the critics in the film.

Would someone who gets the DVD let me know if it's closed captioned for the hearing impaired? If it is, there would be a little "cc" somewhere on the cover...

Thanks...

The resistance to Arial has to do with its being a knockoff of Helvetica. That strikes many in the typographic world as being a bit naughty (even though it is legal). Secondarily, the small changes made make Arial harder to read and less attractive (yeah, I know — eye of the beholder issue! )

Comic Sans is a different story; too cute, something like that.

However, Helvetica has detractors too. It is mechanistic, especially in contrast to the humanist sans serif styles that have been popular lately. And there are other points of discussion. It was the hot typeface of my early years in design; it is quite funny now, 40 years later, to see the new designers swooning over it!
