Whereas bouncing them is often a gross abuse of the innocent.

Example: some new virus or malware apparently kicked up over the weekend. On Tuesday alone, I received a thousand bounces.

Understand that it's not my computer sending out the emails; somebody else has my domain name in their address book and whatever's infected their computer is spewing emails with the return address spoofed as random_names@mydomain.com

Bouncing them back to me simply doubles the load on the email system. It doesn't get back to the spammer or to the compromised computer they're controlling. It just makes my life difficult.

Marjolein's not shouting, she's being justifiably emphatic. <g>
