Re "Spy", you could say that the complexity is part of the atmosphere that Le Carre wants to create; the feeling of never quite knowing who you can trust, having always to wonder whether information is fact or red herring, and if red herring, what trail it's trying to draw you away from.

It's complexity for literary effect as much as to move the plot forward, then.

In other words, while I generally agree with you, George, I don't think that "Spy" was the best example. <g>
