Default Exporting to PDF from InDesign

I often create files in InDesign and then I export them to PDF. Typically the presets work fine but I am having a real problem today. I created one pdf that will work great for print and then I tried to create a second PDF for the web. The second PDF is the same size as the first even when I save it as the smallest file size and low res images. I have tried a few different settings but cannot get the file any smaller than 4 MB which is pretty large for the internet. I even opened the PDF up in Acrobat and applied "Reduce File Size" and the file got bigger! I am going crazy here trying to figure out what's going on. All I want to do is create a web-friendly PDF for our customers to view but everything I am doing is having the opposite result than it should. Any advice?

Which version of acrobat? Did you see an error message about an image mask? I have never figured out what it means but sometimes when I see this message the pdf file won't get any smaller because it can't work with images in an image mask.

Is an image identified? If so, try opening it in Photoshop and see if it has been flattened. Maybe Acrobat is in a snit about that.

I am using Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional. I didn't see any error messages at all and I didn't use any masks. It's a simple file that I created in InDesign using a master page for the header and footer. Then I imported pdf files to each of the pages. Then I save the whole thing as one big PDF file. I do this all the time and have never run into this weird problem.

There is no image identified. Acrobat acts like everything is fine and then when I check the file size, it keeps coming out the same no matter if I save it will print press settings, high quality print settings or smallest file size. Seems like a glitch of some sort. I am going to re-boot and see if that helps but it looks like I am going to have to split the file in two sets to get it to open easily on the web. Frustrating cuz it seems like the file should be fine as one set. I have other files that are very similiar and they didn't give me any problems...

Export as PostScript first, and then distill using the web settings.
