Default Powerbook DVD drive (mal)function

Ever since I had my 17" Powerbook I've had trouble get the DVD drive to burn DVDs. They'd work at single speed but any disc I tried burning with Toast 5 at the default double speed would be trashed about ¾ of the way through with an obscure error code.

I assumed it was a hardware problem and decided to live with it until I could afford to have the machine out of action long enough to send it back to Apple.

Anyway, a couple of weeks ago an Apple technician suggested I tried Toast 6 and it now works perfectly!

Anyone else having similar problems with an Apple Superdrive might want to try the same fix.

I'm pretty certain this is the issue and one of the solutions that's been discussed a lot lately at the MacInTouch web site. It might be in their DVD Problems report.

As it happens, I've now replaced the DVD drive with a new one from MCE -- it's faster and handles DVD+R and dual layer DVDs. It works a treat.

We did have a few problems fitting it and had to file a few bits off the casing to get it to fit but now it's in it's fine.

You're far braver than I!
