That was the first version (I too have the clear plastic frame); the newer Apple monitors are sleeker, metal bordered, but I believe the LCDs are comparable.
What size monitor do you have? I talked to my friend who has the big Mac monitor, and it turned out that she has two of them (one for the G4 and one for the G5), but both are 23". I coulda swore they was 30" -- they just seemed huge to me.

So now I have to rethink whether I really do need the 30". I thought I'd visit the local Apple store (if they are not still swarming with iPhone seekers) and look at the monitors and decide on the size before I do any more research. (I'm assuming the Apple store will have monitors on display.)

Dell definitely has a 30" monitor -- Mr. E was spec'ing out a new PC on the Dell site (he had sticker shock from the price quote I got from a small PC company -- about $5,000 not including a monitor -- and was trying to prove that Dell would be cheaper) but I'll have to do more research to see how good it is.

I never cut costs on monitors, though. Price is not a big issue. I'm gonna be looking at the thing for many, many hours a day. Once I decide what size I need, I'll start looking at reviews. I just wish the Sony I originally wanted was still available -- I'd just cut to the chase and buy it.
