PDFMaker is the name given to a set of macros that installs in Word et al.
It's a COM add-in now (and has been for some time), and you seem to avoid the surreal effects that used to be observed as each step in the macro was performed (earlier, you could put in an instruction to freeze the screen until the whole macro was finished).

It may add lots of other features to the PDF (tagging for accessibility etc.) that may or may not be needed
The fancy features can be left out: there's a setting for that, in fact there are about ten settings, including the pukka PDF/A etc. You can choose one for minimum file-size.
