Buying technology is not unusual. For example, many of the Adobe products had lives before Adobe. What is interesting to me is where Microsoft is moving with graphic software. They seem to have stumbled with their low-end line of graphic products, which is an area they are usually good at. Now they are coming out with their Expression line, which is going after the high end, but not quite the same high end Adobe goes after.

OTOH, they did come out with Silverlight, which is an assault on Flash. And they quickly got NetFlix to use it.
