So I will jump right in. I come from a writing and graphic design background, with a minor in typesetting (used to moonlight on some of the old strike-on systems, including the IBM Composer). I set up my design business in New York City in 1968 (and moved it to Connecticut in 1976), and have run it ever since, though now I am what most would call retired (but I say semi-retired).
I jumped into desktop production as soon as I could (with PageMaker 1.2). Silly me, but I was always amused by computers, and I had traded in my old Apple ][ for a Mac 128K in 1984, so it seemed like a good idea at the time. Had to update my hardware and software a few times until I could really produce whole jobs on the computer, though. I guess my studio was more or less fully computerized by 1987. When DTP really began to make inroads into the design and type industries, I started writing about it. I had columns or articles in Personal Publishing, Step-by-Step publications, Publish, MacWeek, MacUser, MacWorld, Aldus and Adobe magazines, and several others. In 1989, I was one of the founding sysops of the new Desktop Publishing Forum on CompuServe. We moved to our own web site in 2004, and shortly thereafter expanded to cover web design and production when INETPUB also left CompuServe. That is what you find here. I still love type, design, and good writing, and talking about these things, often right here on the forum. Hope you will join in. __________________ :: [SIGPIC][/SIGPIC] |
