Default Vista! Ah, Vista, why these useless fonts!

Since committing the egregious folly of 'upgrading' to Vista, I have acquired a multitude of unwanted foreign fonts. No, not the 'C' word fonts, but things like Mongolian, Japanese, Chinese, Hebrew and Arabic fonts which are neither of use or ornament to me. They clutter up my font listings and use resources needlessly. But can I remove the little beggars? Can I heck as like! Some uninstall only to reload when I reboot. Others refuse to budge under any circumstances.Neither of my font managers can get rid of them, and Vista tells me I need permission to uninstall them manually , even when I have administrator rights, UAC is turned off and my name is included in the permissions list for the files. There is no Help topic covering this issue and Microsoft KB is like the fabled chocolate teapot on the matter.

Any person who can show me how to banish BatangChe,SimSun, FrankRuehl,Iskola Poota (I kid you not)et al to the Recycle Bin will have my undying gratitude: a not insubstantial reward!!!

I work on a Mac, so can only commiserate. We also have Asian, Arabic, and other mysterious fonts that the OS cannot live without.

I hope we all find solutions to these. Font managers cannot override system imperatives, that I have found.

On OSX you can delete all those foreign-language fonts with Monolingual. I just wish there was something similar for the PC.
Oh, it's not always the OS that bungs them in: CorelDraw 10, for example, insisted on having an Arabic font installed!

Hey, thanks for that. I just downloaded Monolingual.

Now have to try it.

Beware: it's irreversible!

Really? Don’t like that.

If it is just a matter of the fonts, you can keep copies and drag them back in, no? But perhaps it is not only the fonts?

Does Vista have "safe mode"??? I wonder if you booted into that if it would let you delete those fonts--and keep them truly gone?

I wonder if there is some sort of "background" driver loading on boot and that's why they keep getting reinstalled...might be worth checking what's being loaded using MSConfig (??? I'm running W2K so I'm not sure what's available)...I don't know if Mike Lin's lovely little app StartUP CPL works on Vista but it might be worth an email to him...

Also, press F8 when you are booting and see what options are available...apparently there is one option for "unsigned driver" (someone on one of the Epson printer lists mentioned this as a workaround to install a recalcitrant piece of software) and apparently it allows you more freedom...

Pretty sure it's more than just fonts. I think the program warns you about what it's going to do.

Well, I had second thoughts (or maybe I am just chicken — I started out in OSX by trying to delete fonts I didn’t want, and had to reinstall the OS). Color me chicken.

Ooh, my heart bleeds for you, KT!
But now that you HAVE reinstalled, why not give the program a try?
